Events
As well as our monthly reading group meetings, we organise 'Building Utopia for Theatre Workers' events. The format consists of inviting speakers from the left, outside of theatre, to give short presentations to initiate discussions on how we could radically improve the industry. Previous speakers have included: Arjun Harrison-Mann and Benjamin Redgrove from Disabled People Against the Cuts; Jac Bastian from Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants; Javie Huxley from Save Latin Village; and Navid Somani from

Upcoming
Building Utopia for Theatre Workers
Friday October 4th, 19:00 – 21:30 BST
The Workshop, 26 Lambeth High Street, London, SE1 7AG
A FREE event for theatre workers and students to discuss big ideas of utopia and what steps both large and small we need to take in order to get there. It might be through radical organising through unions like Equity and BECTU; we might be talking about practical steps to decolonise our institutions; or through demanding policies like free childcare, a living wage for all, getting rid of tuition fees, 100% accessible buildings, artistic director elections, unlimited development time, free housing... We want to think about ideas big and small and organise practically how we can get there.
Book your place here.
How will the evening pan out?
Speakers & Discussion (1 hour)
Speakers from outside the theatre industry outline ideas for 5-10 mins each, ending in a provocation for participants to discuss.
The speakers are:
- Nadia Idle, member of Plan C and Acid Joy Collective talks about perceptions of mental health, individualism and creativity
- Duncan McCann, a researcher from the New Economics Foundation discussing the merits of Universal Basic Services vs Universal Basic Income
- Katya Métay, an activist from London Renters Union
Short break (10 mins)
Phase Two - Open Space (50 mins)
Open Space practical section - any individuals can raise questions or topics they would like to discuss in a smaller group. People choose which conversation they would like to be a part of and can leave any convo to go to another one, at any time. If you feel you aren’t learning or contributing use the law of two feet - move on to another conversation.
Previous topics: “In a post-work society, where does theatre fit in?”; “What can we do (and what is already being done) to combat structural and interpersonal racism in the theatre?”; “What do unions do?”; “How do we facilitate an abundance of paid theatre work?”; “How do we make theatres a great place to work for parents and/or carers?”; “Could UBI breakdown the class barrier in theatre?”
Join us for an evening of radical discussions.
